Eating in Lanarkshire
Clyde Valley has a comprehensive range of produce including organic and free range products. The guide includes a section on Farm shops which are well worth a visit on your day out in Lanarkshire to pick up some tasty local produce. Go along experience and taste the local produce- especially the strawberries and tomatoes grown in the Clyde Valley. You won't want to buy anything else!
A flavour of the provenance and story behind the products have been higlighted in the features section within. Highlights include the recent Scotland Food and Drink award winners Carmichael Estates venison rashers, the special Lanark Blue cheese from HJ Errington and Co, multi award winning Ramsays of Carluke, and the unique pies from Simple Simon himself.
This guide encourages buyers to make contact with the producers and buy locally. It comprises producers who have taken part to date in the project outlined below who are being referred to as the Clyde Valley Food Network. The network is in very early stages at present and we hope to build on this in the near future with further events, and encourage other producers and processors onboard and hopefully have a 2nd edition of the guide very soon.
The media is constantly bombarding us with messages about healthy diets, eating fresher and more seasonal products, saving the environment, lowering our carbon footprint, lowering food miles, and all against the backdrop of a current economic downturn. This guide is a first step to addressing these concerns in relation to buying more local food.
South Lanarkshire Council recently undertook a project to identify who was producing local food in South Lanarkshire area and who was buying the food locally, and for those who weren't, why not. In conjunction with the LEADER programme and Scottish Agricultural College, the project facilitated workshops with producers and food buying businesses to identify the constraints to more local trade being done and assessed the potential for working together more. A trade showcase on Monday 15th June 2009 together with the guide below are the first outputs from the project. Please click on the pdf icon below to download the guide.
