The museum which used to open in the summer months was not re-opened in 2011 as a result of the spending cuts. However, it has been agreed that local organisations and groups should be given time to produce proposals for alternative uses of the building.
In the meantime, the artefacts have been removed for safekeeping and we are considering setting up a number of temporary exhibitions at various locations across South Lanarkshire.
The John Hastie Museum was a local history museum, sitting on the edge of Strathaven Park.
The museum was gifted to the town by John Hastie, a successful Victorian businessman, who owned a licensed grocery at The Cross in Strathaven.
Before his death in 1889, he provided funds to build a museum for the benefit of the people of the town.
John Hastie was a collector of pottery, porcelain and 'antiquities'.
