Marlena Morris at Summerlee

Marlena Morris - Summerlee Gates

Summerlee Museum's Viewing Pod Gallery is currently hosting a new exhibition of photographs depicting Coatbridge through seasonal changes.  Admission is free.

The work of American student Marlena Morris, who lives in the town, the exhibition displays some 20 images taking the viewer from winter to spring 2012.

Describing her work, Marlena said: "I have selected a cross-seasonal approach centred around winter, because of the ramifications the urban landscape has on the town's inhabitants. I feel these conditions create an atmosphere of isolation, a major aspect of my proposed work and the reason for the exhibition's title  'Anatomy of an Isolation".

North Lanarkshire Museums' collections and exhibitions manager Clare Weir said: "Marlena has created an exhibition of eerie but disquietingly beautiful photographs. The images are not the slick and glossy images of a travel catalogue. Instead, they use the architectural landscape and cultural heritage of the town to document some idiosyncratic aspects of Coatbridge".

The exhibition runs until Sunday 10 September, from 10am to 5pm.

Illustrated:  'Untitled #19'.

Marlena says: "This image was shot with a Mamiya RB 67 camera with a 90mm lens. It is of the gates to the museum. I thought the contrast between a rare blue sky and the iconic image of the workers was striking - especially considering the irony that, on the exact location I shot this image, they would not have been able to see the sky through all the smoke and fires from the iron works!"
