Enjoy a walk along the River Clyde Rural sheep

Abington is an idyllic, peaceful, rural South Lanarkshire village, located on the A702 and is the starting point for the Clyde Valley National Tourist Route heading north east towards Biggar.

Abington also has a Visitor Information Centre in the Welcome Break services just off the M74.

Beautiful Scenery

With a population of 373, Abington is nestled at the point where the Clyde Valley meets the Beattock summit and is surrounded by rolling hills and scenery.

Abington is an ideal location for a family day out away from it all by the Clyde. Walking in the surrounding countryside, the family can enjoy river, forest and grassy treks through the Clyde Valley landscape.

Within this small, picturesque village, Abington Hotel and the village shop provide focal points for the village and  these, alongside the fire, police stations and a bank, mean that although the village is quiet it very much retains its own close community.

Brief History of Abington

Abington represents a historic gateway to Scotland, dating back 2000 years. From the time of the Romans up until the current day, the road passing by Abington follows an ancient Roman route, connecting the River Clyde in Abington to a roman fort at Musselburgh.

Early occupation of the area is an interesting topic supported by evidence of ancient Hill Forts standing guard over the Abington Stretch of the Clyde Valley as well as the medieval motte and bailey, discovered near the services on the M74.

More recently, Napoleon is said to have stayed at the Abington hotel after a tiring day shooting grouse in 1839.

The village sits near to the Caledonian Railway route to Glasgow, built in 1847.

The growth of Abington is very much indebted to the railway though Abington station itself was closed in the 1960's. Abington has therefore remained a quiet and peaceful village, with good transport links, but also enjoying a peaceful, rural existence in elegant hills and woodland.
