Lanarkshire Family History Society

Discover your family history

Research Your Family History

The Lanarkshire Family History Society is located in Motherwell and is dedicated to researching the family history of the people of Lanarkshire and also hold information on others areas of Scotland.  The society can be extremely helpful in finding out information related to this pursuit.

The Society was founded in 1991 by a small group of people after attending a series of lectures on family history by the Community Education Department. As the Society grew in numbers it was necessary to find suitable premises to further the aims of family history research.

For the next ten years the meetings were held at Hamilton Central Library and from January 2002 until December 2005 they were held at Motherwell Heritage Centre. Once again they had to move the Speaker evenings because the numbers attending were approaching the Fire Safety Regulations. The monthly Speaker meetings are now held at the GLO Centre, 78 Muir Street, Motherwell. ML1 1BN on the second Thursday of each month 7.00 - 9.00 pm except July and August.

The aim of the society is to encourage and promote interest in family history and to provide the means whereby research will be successful. The syllabus includes talks on various subjects relating to family and local history. The society provides a program for beginners and for those unfamiliar with Scottish records. The society has a “Graveyard Group” who visit Kirk yards and Cemeteries transcribing the Monumental Inscriptions. They also have a “Projects Group” who are always transcribing old Documents and Records for the benefit of all members.

A monthly interest evening is held in the Resource Centre where members can discuss problems they are experiencing with other members. These evenings are well attended and enjoyed by the members. The 3 groups are:- “Irish Interests”, “Military Matters” and “Old Handwriting”. Each group meets on separate evenings, send an E-mail to secretary-lanarkshirefhs@hotmail.co.uk for further information.
