  Designated a 'market town' by Act of Parliament in 1695, Airdrie has a strong agricultural heritage. During the 18th and early 19th Centuries, it gained a reputation as a centre for high-quality weaving. Then, following the growth of the iron industry in the area, the town developed rapidly and became home to many successful engineering businesses.

Attractions

Airdrie boasts one of Scotland's three public observatories, part of the town's library in Wellwynd. If you'd like to know more about the observatory, take a look at www.astra.org.uk.
