Biggar

biggarHistory

Biggar was established as a burgh long ago, in 1451 - and was the site of the Battle of Biggar in 1297, when William Wallace defeated the English Army. The town was, for a long time, connected with textiles, cattle and brewing. The Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid lived in a cottage at nearby Brownsbank.

Attractions

The Town Centre has recently benefited from extensive improvement. Offering a niche shopping experience where you can find unusual gifts, it puts the fun and individuality back into shopping. And it's also home to a Christmas shop which is open all year round!

St Mary's was the last church to be built in Scotland before the Reformation - and is definitely worth a visit. There are also 6 museums in the town, as well as a professional puppet theatre and a lively Theatre Workshop.
