Coatbridge
History
In the 19th Century, the number of local iron foundries in Coatbridge led to the town becoming Scotland's leading producer. You can find out more about the town's fascinating past at Summerlee Heritage Park, a VisitScotland 4 star attraction based around the site of the former Summerlee Ironworks and a branch of the Monklands Canal.
Attractions
The North Calder Heritage Trail starts just by Summerlee and 16km of purpose built paths take you past Airdrie to Hillend Reservoir - and the Glasgow Edinburgh cycle route also passes between Coatbridge and Airdrie. To the west of the town is Drumpellier Country Park with a range of outdoors events and activities, children's play area and visitor centre with cafe. The Coatbridge Golf Course and Driving Range is situated in the park and visitors are welcome.
Please note that Summerlee will close on 22 October 2006, until spring 2008, for a major Heritage Lottery Fund supported redevelopment, including a new £10million Visitor Centre.
