Hamilton
History
Once the county town of Lanarkshire, Hamilton is steeped in history, and has managed to retain the atmosphere of a "market town". Becoming a burgh in 1451, the town was strongly linked to the fortunes of the Hamilton family, In the 18th and 19th Century, the town grew around the industries of textiles, mining and engineering.
Attractions
Hamilton's town centre has recently been revived through multi-million pound developments - making it a vibrant place with modern shops, a multi-screen cinema, night clubs and restaurants. The striking Town House is made up of the old Hamilton Central Library, Hamilton Town House, and Hamilton Town Hall. Now tastefully restored, it's a modern complex hosting a library, professional theatre performances and social events. While you're here, don't miss the impressive Hamilton Mausoleum.
