Take a trip to M&Ds Great kids days out at Chatelherault

There's great fun days out for all the family in Lanarkshire !

For great family days out in the north theres so much to see, from South Lanarkshire's Leadhills, the highest village in Scotland, to the beautiful Kelvin Valley in the north of the area, the's lots to see and do for all ages and interests!

For a great day out visit the New Lanark World Heritage Site, with its restored mills, café and shop, then walk up to the Falls of Clyde nature reserve.

The ancient hunting lodge and grounds of Chatelherault - once the property of the Dukes of Hamilton - is just up the M74 from New Lanark, a couple of miles south of the town of Hamilton. A visit makes for a great family day out on its own - there's great walks, a visitor centre and special events on throughout the year too. Also nearby is Calderglen Park, set by the River Calder just to the east of the town of East Kilbride. The park has a garden centre, miniature zoo as well as a tea room famed for its home-baking!

For an action-packed family day out in the north, a trip to Strathclyde Park is hard to beat. Set by the placid waters of Strathclyde Loch, the park has its own beaches, a watersports centre and is home to M&D's 'Scotland's Theme Park'. Bumper boats and pedallos can be hired from the watersports centre and cycles are also available - great for exploring the park's extensive network of paths and cycleways. Or take a half-day in the park then check out some of the area's heritage at the nearby Motherwell Heritage Centre.

Not to be missed in East Kilbride is the National Museum of Rural Life, which is an award winning museum open daily, and it also includes a gift shop and coffee shop. Visit the musuem for a great family day out, and will provide you with a glimpse into Scotland's agricultural history. Another fantastic museum based in Lanarkshire is Sumerlee - The Museum of Scottish industrial life - in Coatbridge. The museum is free to enter and a small charge gives all-day rides in its electric tramway. For wetter days, there's a huge indoors exhibition hall with lots of 'hands on' activities for the kids. Then take a tour down the recreated adit mine and visit the miners' cottages. There's also a great playpark for tots to teens and sunny picnic area.

A mile or two to the north of Summerlee is Palacerigg Country Park with its tree-top walkway and Rare Breeds Centre - combine a visit to both for a great value day out!

Just over from Palacerigg is the historic town of Kilsyth and the scenic Kelvin Valley. Here you can have a great day out enjoying trips on the Forth and Clyde canal, walks in Dumbreck Nature reserve or enjoying the famous walled garden of Colzium Estate. During the summer, the pretty Burngreen Park in the centre of Kilsyth offers lots of activities for children.

So no matter where you are in Lanarkshire, there's lots of great fun days out to be enjoyed !
