Top tourism award for Lanarkshire Hotel

In a boost for Lanarkshire tourism, VisitLanarkshire has won a top accolade for Partnership in Tourism in the prestigious Scottish Thistle Awards, widely regarded as the Oscars of the tourism industry.

The partnership between North and South Lanarkshire Councils promotes the area as a tourism destination by bringing the public and private sectors together. It aims to attract more visitors to the region; encourage longer stays, and increase visitor expenditure.

Commenting on the award win, Mark Calpin, chairman of the Lanarkshire Area Tourism Partnership, said:  “This award is a real accolade for us and demonstrates the value of partnership working for successful destination marketing.  Our two local authorities - North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council - plus our partner accommodation providers and visitor attractions, have worked very hard to put Lanarkshire on the tourism map.

“We are very pleased to say that we’ve seen much success come from this, with around 80 businesses signed up as members; a strong, established brand and one million page views on each year.  From the launch of our first action plan in 2005, tourism has gone from strength to strength and we are reaping the benefits today.   We are incredibly proud of our results and thrilled to have been recognised at this level.”

Run by VisitScotland, the Scottish Thistle Awards are designed to discover and celebrate excellence and innovation by the Scottish tourism industry.
