David Livingstone Centre
During 2016 and 2017 an exciting redevelopment is taking place at the David Livingstone Centre, turning the birthplace of the famous missionary and explorer into a truly world-class museum. Until it reopens a temporary exhibition is available to view in the visitor centre, and the beautiful grounds will be staying open for visitors to enjoy. The regular events programme will continue, with details available on the website.***
The David Livingstone Museum tells the story of Livingstone’s life and work, housed in the tenement block which Livingstone and his family shared with 23 other families.
The museum is packed with items relating to David Livingstone’s explorations in Africa. These include journals, letters and navigational equipment, as well as dioramas of significant events in his travels. It also gives a fascinating insight into the living and working conditions of 19th-century Scotland.
