Watersports in Strathclyde Loch
Strathclyde Country Park is now firmly established as one of Scotland's leading centres for outdoor recreation. The watersports centre hosts many major events: 2005 Glasgow Special Olympics, 2006 Scottish Triathlon Championships, 2011 International Children's Games and the first ever Great Scottish Swim in 2009.
Most recently Strathclyde Country Park was the official venue for the triathlon event of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Thousands of visitors every year come to indulge in the huge range of activities available from rowing to sunbathing, birdwatching, water ski-ing and cycling. Coarse Angling permits are available for the Loch, rivers and ponds. Part of the Clyde walkway, from Glasgow to New Lanark runs through the park.
Mature woodlands, rough wetlands, wildlife refuges and neat open parkland all surround Strathclyde Loch, a man made loch created in the early 1970s by flooding the old mining village of Bothwellhaugh. However the history of the park can be traced as far back as the Romans with remains of Bothwellhaugh Roman Fort and a Roman bath house and arched Roman bridge within the park. Additionally the site of the Battle of Bothwell Bridge (1679) is located to the north west of the park.
Strathclyde Country Park is accessible by public transport and a bus stop is situated at the Motherwell entrance to the park. If making your way by train please alight at either Motherwell or Airbles Road stations from where you can either walk, take a bus or taxi to the park. It is advised that timetable directions be sought before travelling. For patrons who are travelling to the park by car there are numerous car parks within the park with in excess of 3,000 spaces available.
